The problem with the Computer opponent on and Lichess is that they basically move instantaneously regardless of the time controls or the difficulty setting.įor example, in a 69 move match that took me about an hour, the AI thought for just over 18 seconds. When I play it with unlimited time, and force myself to take a minimum of 3 minutes to think every move through, even if it seems like it's obvious and you should make the move instantly, my play improves massively and I beat it.

I always miss something, whether it's an obvious tactic, leaving pieces undefended, opening a diagonal for the opponent when I really wouldn't want to if I'd thought about it.

The problem is that I can't even beat Stockfish Level 1 AI on Lichess when I try to play Blitz and Bullet because I basically don't think, I just perform really poor analysis and basically make a move without thoroughly considering the full impact of it. That's the most popular form of chess online. Remember that the people who are against engines may well be fans of blitz and bullet. Find the setting that allows you to win, but only if you take your time and really think about things. You don't want one that demolishes you, and you don't want one that you can demolish. Play a handful of games at each difficulty level until you find one that pushes you. This can also cause time trouble issues as you constantly find yourself double/triple checking everything beyond what is needed just to confirm some hidden resource isn't there.

If you habitually play a computer and lose your confidence, you'll start subconciously thinking your opponents will find some hidden refutation to everything you try.

Does that mean playing the combination was wrong? At the end of the day, when you play a combination, you have to say to yourself "I think this series of moves wins material and I don't see a refutation, nor do I think my opponent will find one". If you look through the history of top level GM games, they are littered with game winning combinations that are easily refuted by computers. On a day I am feeling good, I easily play 100 rating points higher than norm and on days I'm feeling off, I play much worse.

Having confidence (even misplaced confidence) in your calculation ability is hugely important to playing well. When you start playing humans again, you tend to get scared to play anything sharp even when the position warrants it. At max settings, they find every possible defensive resource and after getting punished repeatedly for playing tactical lines, you end up playing passive chess. To add on to this, playing computers really affects your confidence. Please continue to give us your feedback and suggestions on how we can help make /r/chess better for everyone.
